Chapter Six

Eve

I had no idea how Landon put up with people coming on to him and demanding things from him like that. People spoke to him as if they knew him and were entitled to say whatever the hell they pleased. My face heated with shame because technically, I’d done exactly the same thing. Okay, so I hadn’t berated him the way that man had just done, but I’d blathered on to him as if we were friends before I’d even introduced myself.

Did he ever get tired of that?

I know I would.

I’d seen something similar happen with my boss, Travis, who was a famous country music singer. People who grew up in Creede knew Travis, of course, but when the tourists came in during the summer months, they flocked to him like moths to a flame, demanding autographs and wanting to know when he was going to have a new album out. But it wasn’t just the polite questions that were an issue, it was the way complete strangers were overly familiar with him. When that happened, they thought they could say anything they wanted to say.

Landon parked his truck in the yard then cut the engine. He got out then jogged around the front of the car to open my door for me. He’d been doing little things like that all night and I had to admit, I liked it. Some people might have called it old fashioned, but I never did understand why someone having manors and being chivalrous could fall out of fashion.

He followed me up the steps of the porch then put his hand on my upper arm. “Thank you for having dinner with me tonight. I had a really nice time. I hope we can do it again soon.”

“I’d like that.”

As we stared at one another, a sensuous light passed between us. When Landon’s eyes dropped to my lips, the anticipation of what was to come was almost unbearable. When his lips finally met mine, I let out a breathy moan.

His lips were perfectly soft and in complete juxtaposition to his bristly beard. As he whispered my name, I opened my mouth and let my tongue snake out to meet his. When his hands slid around my waist, a dizzying current ran through me. It felt as if I’d been waiting forever for this kiss, but it was over much too soon. Landon took a step back, putting distance between us and I mourned the loss.

“Do you want to come in?” I asked in a rush.

I didn’t want to ruin any chance of beginning something deep and meaningful with Landon, but neither did I want our night to come to an end.

A grin overtook his features.

“What’s so funny?”

He shrugged. “It’s just that, I had all this planned out. I was going to walk you to your door then kiss you and be on my way. I didn’t want you to think I was being pushy.”

I rolled my eyes. “Are you kidding me? You’re the least pushy person I’ve ever met.
